An informative mix of data and discussion, this text presents conclusions and recommendations for policies that can respond to the new conditions shaping America's working families. Among the family and work trends reviewed are: the growing population of mothers with young children in the workforce; the increasing reliance of nonparental child care; the growing challenges of families on welfare; and the increased understanding of child and adolescent development. Included in this comprehensive review of the research and data on family leave, child care and income support issues are: the effects of early child care and school-age child care on child development; the impacts of family work policies on child and adolescent well-being and family functioning; the changes to federal and state welfare policy; the emergence of a 24/7 economy; the utilization of paid family leave; and an examination of the ways parental employment affects children as they make their way through childhood and adolescence. The text also evaluates the support systems available to working families, including family and medical leave, child care options and tax policies. The committee's conclusions and recommendations should be of interest to anyone concerned with issues affecting the working American family, especially policy makers, programme administrators, social scientists, journalists, private and public sector leaders and family advocates. Ever since Richard Louv diagnosed nature-deficit disorder in his classic book Last Child in the Woods, parents and teachers have been looking for more ways to connect children with the outdoors. Nationally recognized naturalist and artist Clare Walker Leslie has been igniting kids curiosity about nature for more than 30 years. Her unique approach combines directed observational activities with journaling and field-note prompts that are designed to nurture the next generation of nature lovers and environmentalists. The Nature Connection is an interactive workbook chockfull of creative exercises for kids ages 8 to 13. Leslie begins simply by encouraging children to look out the window and record what they observe: What color is the sky? What shapes are the clouds? Are there any birds? What kind? Are there signs of what season it is? Once outdoors, kids are prompted to record the sounds they hear, the ground plants they see, the direction of the wind, the shape and direction of their own shadows, and how each of these change from day to day, season to season. The Nature Connection offers dozens of fun things to do during every season: write a poem; make a sketch; tell a story; record the daily sunrise and sunset times for the next month; draw a local map and mark the spots where trees, rocks, animals, and other nature sights reside (and identify each one); keep a moon journal; learn the constellations; or collect leaves and bring them home to sketch and identify. Sure to engage the whole family in outdoor fun and year-round nature activities, The Nature Connection will also stand as a permanent record of a child's unique sightings and experience with nature. Transracial adoptees, children of mixed parentage, children of setteld immigrant families - more and more children are growing up in mixed-race families and social environments. And there is increasing variety within this mixed-ness. Yet services for them have been bogged down by restrictive policy and practice guidelines based on: outdated and problematic ideas about essentialised racial identities; and, the supposed need for children to commit fully to one of these identities (usually the black minority ethnic one) in order to minimise identity problems and experiences of discrimination.Of great significance to anyone working with such children and young people - in social work, adoption and fostering, education, youth work and youth justice - this book asks: why essentialist ideas about a single identity tend to dominate; what the consequences are for those who actively choose not to identify themselves as having a single racial identity; and, how policy and practice can be improved.Patel provides thought provoking analyses of existing literature, and calls for recognition of these individuals, for example those who were transracially adopted as children, and whose reflective narratives form a major part of this book. She offers suggestions on how we can best serve their needs and facilitate their access to racial identity rights. She covers such issues as: racism in a black and white society; the implications of assigned binary black or white racial labels; the construction of various social relationships, with an insight into the complex issues involved in their racialised negotiations; and, ways of supporting mixed-race people to express multiple identity status."Mixed-up Kids" argues for better and more informed ways of thinking about how racial identity is flexible, diverse, and possesses a multiple status; and how such thinking will progressively lead to an improvement in the child, family and community support services which seek to assist some of the most vulnerable and marginalised members of society, namely black minority ethnic and mixed race children. As the book presents the narratives of six adults who had been transracially adopted as children, it is of special interest to anyone working in the field of adoption and fostering. It will also be of compelling interest to academics, researchers and students in the social sciences, especially sociology, social work and family/community studies; and of direct practical value to child, family and community support workers. It can serve both as a handbook on which to base policy and practice, and as a tool for considering key issues in the area. More Info

As the internet and new online technologies are becoming embedded in everyday life, there are increasing questions about their social implications and consequences. Children, young people and their families tend to be at the forefront of new media adoption, benefiting from early take-up of new opportunities afforded by the internet, mobile and broadband content, online games and peer-to-peer technologies. However, they also encounter a range of risky or negative experiences for which they may be unprepared. These risks, the everyday contexts in which they occur, and the ways in which they are being addressed, are all subject to continual change. This book captures the diverse, topical and timely expertise generated by the EU Kids Online project, which brings together 60 researchers in 21 countries across Europe. Each chapter has a distinct pan-European focus - this comparative approach is unique in a domain dominated either by American findings internationally or by local findings. More Info

Today, in a world quite different from the one that existed just thirty years ago, both girls and boys play soccer, baseball, softball, and other youth sports. Yet has the dramatic surge in participation by girls contributed to greater gender equality? In this engaging study, leading sociologist Michael A. Messner probes the richly complex gender dynamics of youth sports. Weaving together vivid first-person interviews with his own experiences as a volunteer for his sons' teams, Messner finds that despite the movement of girls into sports, gender boundaries and hierarchies still dominate, especially among the adults who run youth sports. His book widens into a provocative exploration of why youth sports matter--how they play a profound role in shaping gender, class, family, and community. More Info

Book clubs are sprouting up all over, and so are book club guides—but not all book club guides are equal. Many focus on a specific type of book club, or they take a generic approach of one size fits all; and most do not take into account the special needs of librarians and educators working with young readers. This guide has it all, and it will help you ensure that your book club meetings are both fun and educational. Focusing on children in grades 3-8 (and their families), the book offers 100 ready-made book club instructions for popular children's and YA titles—from newer releases, such as Theresa Nelson's Ruby Electric and Blue Balliett's Chasing Vermeer to perennial favorites and award-winning classics, such as Johanna Hurwitz's Much Ado about Aldo and Gary Soto's Baseball in April and Other Stories. Along with thought-provoking discussion questions, you'll find all the background information you need to conduct lively book discussions with a variety of readers-plot summary, themes and characters description, genre, reading level, author and award information, related reads, and more. The guide describes four types of family-oriented book clubs—family, mother/daughter, father/son, and readers' rap—as well as a book club for kids only. The author provides practical instructions for making each type of book club successful. For each title, she provides a plot summary, characterization sketches, questions to use for provocative discussion, and follow-up bibliographies on similar reads. Notes on genres, themes, and reading levels are also provided. The selected titles reflect some of the best, most current, and most popular children's literature. In addition, a broad scope of genres and multicultural titles are included. Perfect for public library programs and after school book clubs, this is a one-stop resource, with practical, ready-made plans that can easily be adapted to multiple environments. Grades 3-8. Since "family" takes on such highly varied forms, any discussion of what it is, who it is, or what family life is like is bound to be complicated--perhaps even controversial. Couples, Kids, and Family Life examines these issues in an engaging and insightful way, approaching the realm of family from "the inside out." Offering a distinctive view of what the social worlds of family life might look like from the standpoint of "insiders, " it examines family perspectives and scenarios though the eyes of partners, parents, children, and significant others. Featuring a series of specially commissioned chapters by leading scholars in the field, the book uses real-life examples to present a distinctive look at the social worlds of domestic life. Divided into three parts, Couples, Kids, and Family Life includes discussion questions after each chapter, suggesting ways of approaching the key concerns laid out in each section. Part I, "Couples, " focuses on married or soon-to-be married partners, addressing such topics as romanticism and realism in marriage, the categories of husband and wife, and marital equality. Part II, "Parents and Kids, " examines the perspectives of different actors in the family drama, concentrating on their various reactions to domestic challenges like teenagers' whereabouts, using the car, and gender socialization. Part III, "Rearrangements, " deals with family change, including the process of divorce, remarriage, and stepparenting. More Info

To outsiders, the Kuharski family life sometimes looked like controlled chaos. With 13 kids seven by birth, six by airport (adopted) it sometimes felt that way to family members, too. There were those vacations when the entire family jammed into one motel room. There were the excuses: Kari told me she wanted her hair cut that short. Dominic told me the cement was dry. Tony said that Grandma said there wasn t any poison ivy in that area. And, from a child playing with matches in the basement: I didn t know the newspapers would catch fire so quickly and spread to the paint cans. There were the challenges of adopting special needs children and the heartbreak of watching some of those children fail to adapt. Through it all, by the grace of God, much prayer and lots of common sense, the family became an oasis of stability and love. Whether your family is big or small, whether you have young children, old children, grandchildren or no children, Outnumbered! will bring you to a place at a very special family table. More Info

What is a family? Grandparents, mom, dad, and kids around a Thanksgiving turkey? An egg mother, a womb mother, a sperm donor, and their mutual child? Two gay men caring for their adopted son? In this provocative essay, a leading American legal historian argues that laws about family are increasingly laws about individuals and their right to make their own, sometimes contentious, choices. Drawing on many revealing and sometimes colorful court cases of the past two centuries, Private Lives offers a lively short history of the complexities of family law and family life--including the tensions between the laws on the books and contemporary arrangements for marriage, divorce, adoption, and child rearing. Informal common-law marriage was once widely accepted as a means to regularize property arrangements, but it declined as the state asserted its authority to dictate who could marry and reproduce. In the twentieth century, state attempts to control private life were swept away, most famously in the creation of "no-fault" divorce, a system in which laws that made divorce nearly unattainable were circumvented. Private life, the author argues, as a legitimate sphere, was once basically confined to life in nuclear families; but the modern law of "privacy" extends the accepted zone of intimate relations. The omnipresence of the media and our fascination with celebrity test the boundaries of public and private life. Meanwhile, laws about cohabitation and civil unions, among others, suggest that family and commitment, in their many forms, remain powerful ideals. More Info

No Disposable Kids is based on the authors groundbreaking work at Starr Commonwealth, a private, non-profit service organization that works for the betterment of children, teens, and families by operating a range of educational and treatment programs for court-ordered youths. Starr Commonwealth is nationally recognized for outstanding results. Each year, Starr Commonwealth programs help more than 6, 000 children and families. Throughout the book, the authors provide support for their strategies with powerful real-life stories from their experiences at Starr. The authors believe, as educational research has long shown, that the most effective educators are those who treat students respectfully. Yet current systems in education rely greatly on punishment and strategies that promote power over students. At a time when many are pessimistic about problems facing youth, the authors contend that schools and communities can help all children thrive and succeed. Brendtro, Ness, and Mitchell challenge the notion of any child being too far gone to be helped. They provide insight into the world of these youths by sharing strategies drawn from the best resiliency models and their success with actual cases at Starr Commonwealth. By reframing rebellious acts as signs of resilience, the authors uncover the natural self-righting tendencies of youths who face adverse circumstances. More Info

"I remember a time I tried to create fellowship with my wife and kids. We all went camping. Sounds like something people do to create good memories and establish family ties, right? Well, it was a disaster! Pure tension! It seemed no one could do anything right. Being a city boy I grew up behind a television. My favorite shows were all the education I needed. Camping would be piece of cake! We would set up our tent in wild surroundings. Then we would go fishing, catch the BIG ONE, and roast it over an open fire. For dessert there would be s'mores and roasted marshmallows. Then we would joyfully sing campfire songs. After this I would put the kids to bed in their sleeping bags and they would instantly go to sleep. My wife and I would stay up late next to the fire, looking at the stars and making love. Upon our arrival, I found that reality was a far cry from the movies." Sit back and relax as Jonathan and Maranatha take you on a fun, yet challenging journey through the ins and outs of raising kids. Learn the secrets of how these ordinary parents achieved extraordinary results at winning the hearts of their children.
