Today, in a world quite different from the one that existed just thirty years ago, both girls and boys play soccer, baseball, softball, and other youth sports. Yet has the dramatic surge in participation by girls contributed to greater gender equality? In this engaging study, leading sociologist Michael A. Messner probes the richly complex gender dynamics of youth sports. Weaving together vivid first-person interviews with his own experiences as a volunteer for his sons' teams, Messner finds that despite the movement of girls into sports, gender boundaries and hierarchies still dominate, especially among the adults who run youth sports. His book widens into a provocative exploration of why youth sports matter--how they play a profound role in shaping gender, class, family, and community.  More Info

Since "family" takes on such highly varied forms, any discussion of what it is, who it is, or what family life is like is bound to be complicated--perhaps even controversial. Offering a distinctive view of what the social worlds of family life might look like from the standpoint of "insiders, " it examines family perspectives and scenarios though the eyes of partners, parents, children, and significant others. Gardner answers his own call for strategic policies responsive to forces affecting children and families with a model for developing such a policy. He also discusses 15 roles that local governments can play, most of which require leadership rather than funding. After reviewing policy in the areas of education and school readiness, substance abuse, youth development, and family support programs, he makes predictions about issues that will affect cities and counties in the future. Is your child a spendthrift? A hoarder? Or maybe, downright oblivious? Are there family money dramas you can do without? In RAISING FINANCIALLY FIT KIDS, Joline Godfrey, one of the countryÂ’s leading experts on kids, parents, and money, gives parents the secrets and knowledge she has gleaned from a decade of working with kids on financial literacy and business. At the heart of the book lies a defined set of values:Money is a tool for achieving and maintaining independence. Saving is good; accumulation for its own sake is not. Spending is best done wisely and within oneÂ’s means (though a bold purchase or investment may also be an act of wisdom). Greed is not good. Giving generously is part of oneÂ’s responsibility to the human family; shepherding wealth is an act of respect—to the past and the future. Money is an energy (not a commodity) that can be used for evil or for good.Designed for adults—parents, grandparents, mentors, advisors, and educators—concerned about raising children  More Info

This is the story of my life as a child growing up with a pioneer Mother. My mother, Dixie Smith was a unique woman who taught her children the gift of never giving up. Dixie and the Kids tells the story of how we moved to Oregon and built our own log cabin, how we made ends meet, and how we loved and laughed along the way. The story is told through the eyes of my family members and of our many animals, however, the memories are mine. We were referred to by friends, neighbors and family as "Dixie and the Kids", and we were a true team. This story is a tribute to my other teammates: Dixie, Ronald and Eugene. Donnale Harp currently lives in Rancho Cucamonga, California, just a stones throw away from where she was born in San Dimas. She has come full circle by returning to her birthplace. She enjoys spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and still loves to get the giggles.  More Info
