The legendary sessions issued complete for the first and only time, including the ultra-rare follow-up sessions from 1928!THE STORY: The recording trip made by VICTOR RECORDS to Bristol, Tennessee in July-August 1927 was a defining moment in country music. Producer Ralph Peer found two acts that acquired national and international fame: Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family. There were ballad singers, street evangelists, string bands, gospel quartets, harmonica virtuosos, Holiness preachers, blues guitarists and rural storytellers. A snapshot of rural American music was caught in an era of rapid change: pictures of a past almost beyond recall, but preserved for ever in these magnificent recordings. The five CDs in this set gather every surviving recording from these sessions, including alternative takes. The accompanying 120-page, LP-sized hardcover book contains newly researched essays on the background to the sessions and on the individual artists, with many rare and unpublished photographs. Among the most intense and fascinating recording sessions of Thelonious Monk's career, Monk's Music surrounds the pianist/composer with his early boss Coleman Hawkins, his ideal drummer Art Blakey, two younger musicians who had worked with him productively earlier in the Fifties (Ray Copeland and Gigi Gryce), and another pair that would soon make history as part of his legendary Five Spot quartet (John Coltrane and Wilbur Ware). The program includes early Monk classics and the thorny new Crepuscule with Nellie, extended blowing performances and a brief opening horn fanfare, the sum of which equals an album where even the rough edges confirm the combustible atmosphere generated when jazz's best worked under the direction of the music's supreme individualist. For many years, we've been getting requests to do a truly definitive country series, but it wasn't until the success of our R&B/Soul series, Blowin' The Fuse (now Sweet Soul Music) that we decided we needed to do something comparable for country music. Now the first six volumes are complete, taking us from 1945-1950. The country series has been compiled with today's fans in mind. Yes, the big hits are there, but so are the classic performances that weren't necessarily big hits at the time, but became influential in the years ahead. Every volume has incredibly detailed behind-the-scenes stories, fabulously rare photos, and an ongoing history of country music set against the backdrop of the broader American music business. Definitive? You bet!1949 begins with Vaughan Monroe's eerie Riders In The Sky and ends with another pop-country crossover smash, Mule Train. In between, look for more classic bluegrass from Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers, as well as Hank Williams' Lovesick Blues, Leon Payne's original I Love You Because, plus all the classic hits from the big artists like Ernest Tubb, Bob Wills, Floyd Tillman, Eddy Arnold, and Hank Thompson. With his son Billie Ray on guitar and grandson David on fiddle, he leads three generations of talented mountain musicians in this collection of murder ballads and folk songs. They have been handed down through the generations and can still be heard on front porches and at dances in the Western North Carolina Mountains. Vocal tunes, including "Knoxville Girl" and "Poor Ellen Smith, " are also featured. More Info

A Child's Celebration of Classical Music, like its esteemed peers in the Music for Little People series, is not only of superior quality, it caters to the interest of kids without dumbing down the music. Beginning with the lively Boston Pops Orchestra rendition of "In the Hall of the Mountain King, " this collection draws the listener into worlds created by orchestral majesty, powerful buildups, and exquisite narrative. Meryl Streep's buttery tones preface Ravel's magically ruminative "Sleeping Beauty" and Carol Channing is simply marvelous in her telling of the giggle-inducing yarn of "Gerald McBoing Boing, " as set to strings and drums, cymbal clashes, and horn accents. David Bowie provides a distinguished narration to Prokofiev's nearly-30-minute-long "Peter and the Wolf" suite, a classic which still thrills and delights audiences half a century after the composer's death. Throughout, children will delight in distinguishing the wide array of instruments and the sounds they represent. --Paige La Grone More Info

This grandly conceived two-disc collection of Hollywood and television Western themes showcases the City of Prague Philharmonic's indefatigable passion for rehashing great works from composers like Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin, and John Williams. But listeners less prone to swoon over highbrow symphonic grandeur may respond with a yawn. Yes, the collection is a wonderful reference source, with a sweeping chronology from John Ford's Stagecoach to Lawrence Kasdan's Wyatt Earp. And the pieces are competently executed, with John Barry's contribution among the highlights. But the concert-hall acoustics--with little to no studio artifice--have a dulling effect. Those with access to the Dolby Surround may detect a rewarding nuance or two, but for others with fewer audiophile idiosyncrasies, the mood may be stuffy and uninspired. --Joseph Lanza More Info

A Portland Selection: Contra Dance Music in the Pacific Northwest, contains beautiful, lively jigs and reels played on fiddle, mandolin, 4-string banjo, and piano. This recording is a companion to the popular tune book, The Portland Collection, and includes a cross section of the different styles and sources of contra dance music encompassed in the book. The CD contains a mix of both traditional and recently composed tunes as well as popular standards and tunes that have not been recorded before. Contra dance music is propelling and energizing. Here, the musicians use more variety than can be found in a typical contra dance setting. They employ a wide range of tempo, expression, and variation from sweet and lyrical to the full, driving medleys that can be heard at dances everywhere. The companion tune book serves as the source for all of the tunes on this recording. Fiddler George Penk is a dancer at heart whether it be on the floor with his feet or on the fiddle strings with his bow. His deep sense of the pulse of the music translates into an unusual ability to infuse his fiddling with both driving rhythm and intense emotion. His music in turn causes dancers respond soaring and gliding to beautiful jigs or stomping and shrieking to fast-moving reels. His range is very broad. George s powerful connection between music and dance has placed him in high demand for Saturday night dances, week end dance camps and week long instructional events on both US coasts. Clyde Curley has been playing folk music on acoustic instruments since high school. He plays mandolin, octave mandolin, and 4-string banjo and is equally adept at melody, harmony, and rhythmic back up riffs on all of them. He also plays fiddle and guitar. In 1986 Clyde began playing for contra dances with Jigsaw and the Rose City Aces. Since then, he has found himself on stages at local dances all over the Pacific Northwest and on staff at festivals and camps in and beyond the Northwest. Currently, in addition to the above musical interests, he is pursuing Quebecois music with his band, Group du Jour. Clyde has retired from several decades of teaching high school English. Susan Songer's driving piano style invests the music with lift and pulse. Her deep connection to the dance is evident when she plays in that setting. She has been on staff at various week end and week-long dance and music camps and has tutored both fiddle and piano at the American Festival of Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Washington. Sue is founder and director of the Portland Megaband, an orchestra of about 75 dance musicians that plays for special contra dances at least once a year. Sue has retired from her private practice in psychology. Susan Songer, Clyde Curley, and George Penk (aka The Portland Connection) have been involved in contra dance music for more than 2 decades. They play local and regional dances. In addition, they have been on staff at week end and week-long dance and music camps and festivals in the Northwest and in other parts of the country. George, Clyde, and Susan each play in many different configurations, with many different musicians. When they play together, their expertise on their instruments, their musical commonalities and bonds, their long experience with contra dance music, and their deep connection to the dance enable them to invest their music with a tight groove, passion and danceability that draws dancers to the hall and keeps them there until the last note of the evening has been played. After touring together and courting similar pop-punk fans, Alkaline Trio and Hot Water Music decided to pool forces for this seven-song EP of original material and covers. Alkaline Trio's new material is true to their current form; the emotional, tripping-over-my-broken-heart stories are about girls and boys getting kicked in the head by their relationships. Ironically, the best song they offer on this disc is "Rooftops, " a song taken from Hot Water Music's 1999 album No Division. The song is a nice change of pace from the Trio's usual midtempo trot through their angst-ridden world. HWM takes over for the second half of the disc, offering two original tracks and covering two of the Trio's songs--"Radio" from Maybe I'll Catch Fire and the aptly named "Bleeder" from Alkaline Trio. Although the differences between the two bands sound slight at first, HWM's material feels more urgently driven by the end, mainly because of the sandpapery vocals and more forceful guitar work. Overall, this split EP doesn't break any new ground musically, but it's a decent item for the avid fans of either band. --Jennifer Maerz More Info

Live Music is a document of the fantastic European tour from 2010. While 2003 s Volume 4 and the seven-month tour that followed that brilliant record featured the reunion of the entire original, iconic Joe Jackson Band from the late 70s, the follow-up, 2008 s Rain, was made with three of those four members: Jackson (vocals and keyboards), Graham Maby (bass/vocals) and Dave Houghton (drums/vocals). This is the band that appears on Live Music, which is made up of 12 tracks culled from board recordings from a variety of cities. Jackson will perform with The Roots as his band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on June 8. Jackson approaches the live setting with a very different mindset than he does his studio recordings. For that reason, his tours are always must-see events as the songs take new shape and evolve over time. His writing leaves much room for re-interpretation and he derives great pleasure from bursting the boundaries and exploring new avenues and readings of his own work. The 2008/09 tours were no different, as it featured a piano-based trio without guitar. Jackson always enjoys the energy that an audience brings to the creative process and he often likes to authenticate the experience by releasing a live record as a historical document of his ideas. Live Music will be the sixth live record in his career. His first was the groundbreaking Big World in 1986, which was all new songs recorded in front of an audience. The second was Live 1980 1986, which was a double album featuring songs from every phase of his career up to that point. The third was 2000 s Summer in the City: Live in New York, which was also a trio record, though that one featured more recent alum Gary Burke on drums. Next was 2001 s Two Rainy Nights, released after the Night and Day II tour, and the most recent was 2004 s Afterlife, which documented the Volume 4 performances. Live Music features nine Jackson classics and three covers: The Beatles Girl, David Bowie s Scary Monsters and Ian Dury s Inbetweenies. The tracks are heard as they were performed. There aren t any fixes, overdubs or corrections. More Info

In the 1930s & 40s, America was awash with dance bands, all vying to make a decent living in difficult times. To stay ahead of the competition, the more dynamic bandleaders knew they needed a trademark, some kind of distinctive sound or gimmick which distinguished them from the others. All the top bands had one or more great vocalists and some were led by superlative musicians - Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Harry James, Gene Krupa. Vaughn Monroe made his singing the attraction, Guy Lombardo went for snappy, happy arrangements, Jimmie Lunceford and Cab Calloway were great showmen, Kay Kyser had his musical quizzes, Glenn Miller eventually topped them all with sheer all-round quality - arrangements, musicians and vocalists. And Russ Morgan, he had that famous 'wah-wah' trombone and unmistakable singing style. See also: JASCD478 - Into The Fifties More Info

Composer Dmitri Shostakovich lived an extraordinarily strange life. A cultured, creative individual forced to play a part in his country s history against his will, used as a propaganda tool of a tyrant. In such a claustrophobic and paranoia inducing environment, Shostakovich was still able to create musical works of genius that have inspired musicians for decades since, including bassist/composer Michael Bates. It would be hard not to admire an individual who endured so much for his art. Shostakovich s musical expression covered a vast emotional territory, from tortured to wistful, deferential to satirical. Risking his own safety and legacy, Shostakovich would deceptively fill his compositions with themes that mocked the person and policies of Stalin and his repressive State. He was a unique figure in the cultural legacy of Russia, a man invested in but not of the State. An agitator, appendage and survivor of Stalin s Soviet Union: these unique characteristics have made Shostakovich and his music an intriguing study. Bates has long been a fan of Shostakovich s music and, through his own study and exploration, has created an ensemble dedicated to the spirit of Shostakovich and his work. This imaginative and intrepid ensemble includes saxophonist/clarinetist Chris Speed, trumpeter Russ Johnson, pianist Russ Lossing and drummer Tom Rainey. Together on the new CD Acrobat: Music for, and by, Dmitri Shostakovich (Sunnyside, 2011), the ensemble brings life to Bates s compositions that are written to embody the many moods of Shostakovich and his diverse output. The program begins with an arrangement of Dance of Death from Shostakovich s Piano Trio No. 2 in E-minor, Fourth Movement. The quirky theme is bounced about jauntily by Speed s clarinet and Johnson s trumpet in a jagged mazurka. Talking Bird follows with clarinet and buzzy bass in a loose waltz meets march. The urgent Strong Arm features a driving melody that meets a twisted yet swinging rhythm maze, the mystery is enhanced by the ambiguous tonal wash of the electric piano. The tempo slows on the impressionistic Some Wounds with the lovely ruminations of Lossing s piano and Bates s bass with the melody sung by longing tenor saxophone and trumpet. Fugitive Pieces features a shrewd ensemble performance that imitates the paranoia and drama of a man on the run. Echoing the work of Miles Davis on In a Silent Way, Silent Witness exudes an Eastern European echo of the early fusion masterpiece. The Given Day balances a smooth, yet dissonant horn line against a pulling rhythm section with a disorienting effect. Based heavily on a Shostakovich theme, Yurodivy meanders brazenly though blindly as instruments proceed and retreat, testing the unsteady waters. Arcangela begins solemnly before it picks up a percussive propulsion and urgency.Michael Bates has been an important part of the New York jazz scene for nearly a decade. His work on double bass has been featured alongside many of the music s most important and influential performers. Bates s work as a composer and bandleader has been garnering recognition recently with his well received releases on the trumpeter Dave Douglas s Greenleaf Music record label. Bates s compositions blend elements from many musical sources, including classical, jazz and rock. Acrobat is a triumph as both a unique musical statement and a tribute to an oft misunderstood legend. Bates is able to generate tremendously inventive musical statements that showcase his wit, sarcasm and daring, also nodding to the similar sentiments frequently present in the work of his hero, Dmitri Shostakovich. Even if the throbbing "Radios in Motion" had its moments of teenage new-wave sloganeering ("All the kids are complaining that there's nowhere to go, all the kids are complaining that the songs are too slow"), White Music proves that XTC were always something more than bumpkin punks. For a start, Andy Partridge loved the Beatles, a sackable offence in those days. As this 1978 debut album proves, XTC's spiky muse--spasmodic rhythms, Partridge's scuffed guitars, Colin Moulding's stuttering bass lines, and Barry Andrews's spontaneous blurts of crocheting keyboards--was inalienably their own. Clearly more closely aligned to the likes of Wire, Devo, and the Talking Heads than to the big-city brigade, White Music was adroitly experimental and as awkward as it was irritable (as on "Crosswires, " "I'm Bugged, " and their sputtering dub version of Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower, " which outshone the Clash's reggae efforts at this point), but also plagued by crippling commercial misfortune. XTC's indecently stymied career path hit the first of many obstacles when the lyrics to the potentially classic pop single "Statue of Liberty" ("In my fantasy I sail beneath your skirt") fell foul of the BBC's quasi-Victorian obscenity mores and failed to chart through lack of airplay. --Kevin Maidment More Info

This pack includes DVD: The Secret of Sleep (a film by Bruce Rubenstein, David Rubenstein, and John Koerner)(CD + DVD set) Music Is Just A Bunch Of Notes was cut in 1972 in an upstairs storefront building above a coffee house on Minneapolis' West Bank. One of the counterculture's first entirely DIY efforts, it was engineered by 12-string guitar legend Dave 'Snaker' Ray and released on his fledgling Sweet Jane label. All of the songs are Koerner originals; the tunes are sequenced with a cinematic eye and interspersed with weird spoken word bits. The album includes several mainstays of John's repertoire, including the timeless Everybody's Goin' For The Money, a song that sums up the uniquely Koernerian brand of existentialism as tidily as any. This CD is mastered from the original tapes and is reissued for the first time since the rare 1972 release. Regarding the DVD, in the 1970 'photo-skit' The Secret Of Sleep, Percival (John Koerner) gets a call in which he's told to go on a mysterious quest. Percy and his buddy (Willie Murphy) wander around in various Utopian settings, but in the end, they return to the city to contend with reality. '[The film is] a permanent record of our illusions, which isn't a bad thing for a film to be.' - Bruce Rubinstein, David Rubinstein, John Koerner More Info
