This eight-disc set (seven CDs and a CD-ROM) didn't seem that appealing at first sight -- after all, there have been dozens of reissues and repackagings, in various forms, of John Williams' music. from Star Wars and the two immediate sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. But with each successive effort, they've made the music sound better, and it was pretty impressive to start with, 30 years back. The results here are somewhat mixed -- the producers have given the scores for the three movies another state-of-the-art digital treatment, which ends up putting parts of the orchestra at various points virtually in the listener's lap. This was essential, as in the space of three decades, home audio systems that are more advanced and sophisticated than the theater sound systems where the first Star Wars movie ran have become routine. But before going further in sorting out the contents here, one matter should be cleared up -- the soundtrack to the 1977 movie once known as Star Wars (and now officially designated Star Wars IV: A New Hope) has been assembled based on the 1997 CD reissue, in the use and arrangement of cues, and will differ significantly from the original 1977 double-LP (which it otherwise resembles visually); the latter featured a lot of editing by Williams, who sought to assemble his music cues into more significant sounding movements for the album; in keeping with the 1997 edition, the producers have re-established the cues in plot-chronological order, as well as offering some relevant outtakes referring back to Williams' original 1977 album conception. The 400-plus minutes of listening here are mostly extremely rewarding, not just for their exceptional fidelity but what that clarity reveals of the details in Williams' writing for the screen -- the Holst influences were obvious from the start, and it's amazing to realize now how thoroughly and successfully the composer reached out to Stravinsky's playbook for some of the best quiet moments in the score. The seventh disc in the set is referred to as The Corillian Edition and assembles cues from all six Star Wars movies, thus acknowledging Williams' later contributions. There's also a CD-ROM (set up to work on both PCs and Macs) that re-creates the artwork, including the various pages of the inserts, from the original three soundtrack LPs. All of that work on the programming, mastering, and production end is great, and if the label had followed through at every other level, this set would get an even higher rating than it does. But the producers also repackaged the CDs in miniature LP-style sleeves, re-creating the original artwork and design of the double-LP soundtrack albums, which is a neat idea; and here's where the flaws in the set become clear -- whereas Sony's Japanese-issued mini-LPs include tiny inner-sleeves to keep the CDs safe in their miniature LP jackets, the company's U.S. division has done us no such courtesy, so the mini-LPs must be kept in the box to prevent the CDs from falling out and rolling away. Additionally, for all of the effort spent enhancing the sound, the makers have given us annotation that's not only sketchy and a bit disjointed, but also very cheap looking -- in place of a booklet, there's just a flimsy folded sheet with lots of artwork and graphics and not a lot of text, and not all of it that well written. For the asking price, one would hope that a little bit more could have been done with the packaging, and it prevents the set from getting a real rave. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi  More Info

When Merle Haggard signed with Epic Records in 1981 he was a bona fide country star, if not quite an icon yet (that would happen in the 1990s when his influence was everywhere with country’s new stars -- although he would no longer see much chart success in country’s contemporary incarnation). The key thing for Haggard with Epic was that he was given permission to produce his own records, which led to leaner and more stripped-down tracks, and the 1980s found him at a creative peak, even if the hits were starting to slow down. This three-disc set surveys his Epic years and includes classics like Haggard's duet with George Jones on “Yesterday’s Wine” from 1982 and a duet with Willie Nelson on Townes Van Zant's “Pancho and Lefty” from 1985. This collection is a great way to hear how Haggard himself preferred to present his songs. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi  More Info

On Making Music, the sound is a little more smoothed out, yet still retains that warm soul feeling for which he is best known. While bleak television images of starving people mar the reputation of Ethiopia, the reality is that Ethiopian civilization reaches back 3000 years to King Solomon and Queen Sheba. In modern times, the country and its capitol, swingin' Addis Ababa, was a symbol of Westernized cultural enlightenment in Africa. It all came crashing down in 1974 when a Stalinist military dictatorship took control of the country. Compiled by Francis Falceto, who also put together the fantastic Ethiopiques series, these 15 tracks are culled from that collection and other single-artist releases to present a broad array of Ethiopian music, much of it recorded before 1974. Here, we go from the funky grooves of Wallias Band to the smooth jazz style of Mogès Habtè to the warm balladry of Girma Bèyenè to the Latin flavor of Fanayé Tesfayé to traditional Ethiopian music. A great place for the inquisitive to begin, this is an exceptional overview of a scene only recently remembered. -- Tad Hendrickson  More Info

Given the length, breadth, and impact of his career as, arguably, the most revered figure in British folk-rock since he first joined Fairport Convention in 1967, it's no surprise that Richard Thompson has been honored with the multi-disc box set treatment not once, but twice. In 1993, noted Thompson, aficionado Edward Haber compiled Watching the Dark, three CD's worth of album cuts, unreleased studio outtakes, and rare live performances which offered a detailed chronicle of Thompson's career in music. However, not all fans were entranced with the set, and Neil Wayne and Nigel Schofield of the noted British folk label Free Reed Music sought Thompson's participation to create RT: The Life and Music of Richard Thompson, a massive five-disc set culled primarily from unreleased recordings taken from Thompson's own archives and accompanied by a 168-page book which includes an exclusive in-depth interview with the man himself. While RT is obviously a tremendous labor of love and a powerful testimony to Thompson's genius as a songwriter and guitarist, compared to Watching the Dark it's something of a disappointment. While the notion of five CD's worth of rare and unreleased Richard Thompson recordings is enough to make nearly any loyalist salivate, nearly all the cuts are live tapes of highly variable recording quality; though most sound fresh off the board, an uncomfortably high percentage are scarred by noticeable technical anomalies (in particular boomy audience recordings and distorted radio broadcasts), and the 1972 recording of The Great Valerio from a Richard & Linda Thompson concert would barely be acceptable even by bootleg standards. (In all fairness, the booklet acknowledges the poor quality of the latter recording.) Also, given Free Reed's leanings as a folk imprint, it's not surprising the set leans heavily on Thompson's solo acoustic performances rather than his electric full-band repertoire, and while the solo stuff here is almost uniformly splendid, the proportions are certainly off in terms of giving an accurate picture of his body of work, especially disc three, which promises a set of Epic Live Workouts but which leans towards acoustic numbers with extended solos rather than the electric explorations that are truly Thompson's most remarkable live achievements. And though Nigel Schofield's liner notes offer an intelligent and impassioned appreciation of Thompson's work, the notes on the tracks themselves are less impressive, and the details on the source materials are often lacking or simply inaccurate (there are no Who covers on any of my copies of Shoot Out the Lights, no matter what Schofield says). None of this should suggest that RT isn't worth a listen -- simply put, Richard Thompson is one of the finest singers, guitarists, and songwriters to emerge in the second half of the 20th century, and there are dozens of dazzling examples of Thompson in full-flight here. Even when the audio is faulty, the performances are sterling, and there are a number of genuine rarities on-board, particularly on disc five, which features precious studio demos of a number of unreleased songs, including the haunting Bad News Is All the Wind Can Carry, Shady Lies, and In Over Your Head. For all its flaws, RT: The Life and Music of Richard Thompson will leave no one with any doubt about the strength of this man's talent. Obsessive fans will find much to revel in, but overall RT seems like a grand opportunity that didn't quite pan out, despite a wealth of good intentions. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi  More Info

The Flower of Chivalry Tranquil medieval music featuring The Hilliard Ensemble There is an emphasis on peace and calm in this selection of medieval music. It includes gentle songs by one of the greatest composers of the age, Guillaume Dufay, whose music charmed the ears of the Burgundian court in the fifteenth century. Plus English harp music by King Henry VIII, and songs by Martin Codax from thirteenth century Spain. The Hilliard Ensemble: David James, Gordon Jones, John Potter, Rogers Covey-Crump Sirinu: Sara Stowe, Matthew Spring, Jon Banks The music on this album deals with universal themes in a timeless and subtle way. The programme interweaves instrumental music from the court of Henry VIII, much of it composed by the King himself, with songs of love and hope by the great medieval musician, Guillaume Dufay. Henry VIII was an able musician, and a composer as well. A manuscript survives of music from his court which contains a surprising number of compositions, both instrumental and vocal, by the monarch. The consorts are particularly beautiful. Like much music of the period, these works can be performed in a variety of ways, as solo instrumental numbers, or as works for more than one performer. Here, they are each played by a single performer, but a variety of instruments can be heard. Guillaume Dufay was probably born in or around Cambrai, in what is now Northern France, but he soon drifted South to Italy, where he studied at the university in Bologna, and became a priest. By 1428 he was singing in the papal choir in Rome, although he kept contact with the North, and worked in Savoy and Cambrai, which was under the jurisdiction of the Burgundian court. The songs by Dufay on this album are unaccompanied, composed for three or four voices, performed by the incomparable Hilliard Ensemble. These songs appear in an important manuscript held in the Bodleian Library, MS Canon.Misc.213. This very beautiful book was written out by hand, possibly by a musician from Saint Mark's, Venice, in the first half of the fifteenth century. It was 'discovered' amongst the Bodleian's collections as late as 1895 by Sir John Stainer, who made the first modern edition. Since his initial study, it has become one of the most discussed of all pre-Renaissance music manuscripts. Martin Codax was a Spanish troubadour, and thus part of a long tradition of travelling court entertainers who could sing and play musical instruments. Codax is one of the earliest named composers and his songs of the sea and of longing for love are to be found in a manuscript. His music is poetic and intense, similar to that of Dufay. It is performed here with instrumental accompaniment from the hurdy-gurdy, one of the most traditional and popular of early instruments. The original songs have music only for the voice, and the arrangement is conjectural. In fact, the sixth song has no music in the original source at all, but music has been composed by Dr Simon Heighes for this recording, in the style of the songs around it. Four solo instruments can be heard on the album: two harps, a clavichord and an organ. The latter two are keyboard instruments: modern copies of fifteenth and sixteenth century originals. The first harp is a modern instrument (played by Victoria Davies) and the second a copy of a medieval harp (played by Jon Banks). It is smaller and has fewer strings than its modern counterpart.  More Info

Hudson Music is proud to announce their release of the latest audio CD from Steve Smith and Vital Information, Vitalization. Vitalization's 12 original compositions (composed by the members of Vital Information) define an emerging, borderless, World Fusion musical style that ranges from up-tempo blues, straight-ahead jazz and ballads to South Indian-influenced and odd-time grooves, funk and contemporary jazz-rock. In 1949, American writer Arthur S. Alberts undertook a 4, 000 mile, six month tour of West Africa, in a jeep filled with up-to-the-minute recording equipment. While most folklorists go into the field with a pretty clear idea of what they're looking for, Alberts appears to have recorded and documented anything he came across, whether it was traditional in nature or not. The results, originally released as a three-LP set on long-playing 78s in the early 1950s, are an honest survey of West African music at the advent of the modern era. Disc One of this CD reissue contains mostly traditional and rural pieces, with several tracks of drumming, as well as sacred and ritual songs, work songs, and school children's chants. The second disc in the set features more guitar, and is urban and modern in tone, concluding with heavily Western-influenced songs from the cafes of Liberia, including three tracks by Howard B. Hayes that could have been recorded at any corner bar in the world, as long as it had a piano. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi  More Info

There are lots of collections like this out there that attempt to chronicle the fascinating story of Jamaica's pop music, but what sets this four-disc, 100-track box apart is that the selections here, and much of the text and song notations (the discs come packaged as part of a book), were made by Edward Seaga. The former Prime Minister of Jamaica was a man who was as much interested in the cultural history of Jamaica as he was in its politics, and he was there when the skewed, defiant, joyous, and infectious rhythms of reggae swept Jamaica into the 20th century. He understood, even as a politician, that music was the island's greatest commercial commodity and export, even if the songs themselves were often harshly critical of the Jamaican government, and authority in general. Seaga's selections cover all the key bases, from ska through rocksteady to reggae and dancehall, and his comments and notes show he knows what he's talking about. He was there. He was Prime Minister. He also loved music and could see and hear the creative musical revolution going on in Jamaica everywhere he went. In the end, politics aside, he was a complete fan, and a bit of a historian. That shows here. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi  More Info

Because of her blues-based comeback in the '90s, Etta James is usually thought of by the general public as a blues singer, but there's a good deal more to the picture than that. In many ways James resembles a female Ray Charles in her unerring ability to tackle (and sometimes combine) all of the strands of American popular music, from rock & roll to R&B, blues, country, gospel, jazz, and pure pop and soul, while still maintaining a distinct feel and sound that is all her own, and she did it throughout a five-decade career. This seven-disc set combines six of the 12 later-in-her-career albums she made for Private Music and RCA Records between 1997 and 2006, including Love's Been Rough on Me (1997), Life, Love & the Blues (1998), Matriarch of the Blues (2000), Burnin' Down the House (2002), Let's Roll (2003), and Blues to the Bone (2004), along with a seventh disc featuring a live show James did in San Francisco in 1981. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi  More Info

Just in time for Halloween 2009 comes this massive compilation of re-recorded background music for films and TV shows with horror themes, 60 tracks on four CDs running more than four-and-a-half hours. The tracks are drawn from Silva Screen Records' extensive library of rerecordings, most of them performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. Compiler Rick Clark has stretched the definition of horror to include movies with supernatural aspects that may not be horror movies per se (serial killers, e.g., Zodiac and TV's Dexter, also make the cut, as it were). But then, when is a horror movie really a monster movie (Cloverfield)? Or a science-fiction movie (Sunshine)? or a fantasy movie (Pan's Labyrinth)? or an adventure movie (The Mummy)? or a mystery movie (The Sixth Sense)? or a thriller movie Dressed to Kill)? or a romantic movie (The Witches of Eastwick)? or an action movie (Predator)? or a comedy movie (Ghostbusters, Young Frankenstein)? or a suspense movie (Duel)? Here, they all come under the heading of horror, and by defining the term loosely, Clark has expanded the types of music that can be included. This isn't all slashing strings, by any means. (In fact, there's only one track composed by Bernard Herrmann, and it's not Psycho!) Another curious programming decision is the more-or-less reverse-chronological order in which the tracks are sequenced. This means that one hears music from The Mummy Returns before The Mummy, Aliens before Alien, Exorcist II: The Heretic before The Exorcist, and, most problematical, Halloween II before Halloween (since director/composer John Carpenter and composer Alan Howarth's Halloween II theme is an elaboration of Carpenter's original theme for Halloween). But, for some reason, the suite from Hellraiser immediately precedes that for Hellbound: Hellraiser II. Also, in many cases, the cues come from remakes, notably King Kong, War of the Worlds, The Mummy, Village of the Damned, and The Thing. Music from both versions of The Haunting is featured. And there are tracks from two different movies called Dracula (as well as the versions of the same story called Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dracula, Prince of Darkness, and Nosferatu, and even one called Taste the Blood of Dracula, which is the fourth of the Hammer studio's films starring Christopher Lee). All of this is to say that, while lengthy, the collection isn't so much definitive as a sort of warehouse-cleaning effort in which Clark has used everything from the vault that could conceivably be included under the definition of horror music from previous Silva Screen projects of, say, the music of composers John Williams (four selections) and Jerry Goldsmith (five selections). But whether or not one accepts the horror premise, the collection functions as a backwards history of ominous-sounding movie music, starting with contemporary composers like Christopher Young (three selections) and James Newton Howard (two selections), and ending with legends like Franz Waxman and James Bernard (six selections, all on the fourth disc). Great movie composers such as Ennio Morricone make surprising appearances (Exorcist II: The Heretic, really!), and so does a great classical composer (Béla Bartók, typically sampled by director Stanley Kubrick for The Shining). For the most part, this is orchestral music, but rock sneaks in here and there, including, curiously enough, the work of George Thorogood (whose Bad to the Bone, used in Christine, is re-created as an instrumental by Nick Watson). If the album really does present a true history, then the '70s was a sort of golden age of horror movie music, particularly in the hands of Carpenter (five selections), whose subtle, simple theme for Halloween remains a terrifying piece of music, whether one recalls its use in the movie or not. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi  More Info
